A major consumer goods company needed to assess its social, environmental and governance issues for inclusion in its annual sustainability report.

Challenge
Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 guidelines for sustainability reporting require the conducting of a materiality assessment of sustainability issues. Our client wanted an independent assessment of the issues that presented the greatest risk to its business and stakeholders.
-
Solution
We used a structured and comprehensive score-based approach to prioritise the client’s sustainability issues. We held extensive interviews with key functional leads to conduct a desk-based research assessment supported by our indices.
-
Outcome
By combining quantitative risk data with qualitative interviews, we produced an accurate assessment based on objective metrics rather than subjective judgements. Interviews also served the purpose of educating internal stakeholders on the requirements and benefits of sustainability reporting.
