Dilemmas research
Our dilemmas research explores the trade-offs of risk management i.e. where mitigating one form of risk may require business to accept another "lesser" risk. Maplecroft analysis explores the subtleties of how to reconcile business priorities, strategy, stakeholder perceptions, sector-specific challenges as well as country and issue risks.
Featured case study
UN Global Compact - The Human Rights Dilemmas Forum
The Human Rights Dilemmas Forum is a United Nations Global Compact project funded by the GE Foundation. Maplecroft is the primary implementing partner.
The forum aims to enhance understanding of human rights dilemmas for responsible business, and contribute to thought leadership and good practice. It focuses mainly on the identification of good practice solutions to human rights dilemmas faced by multinational companies operating in emerging markets, in zones of weak governance or in countries with significant human rights challenges.
Each dilemma - whether to do with human security, civil and political rights, labour rights or other economic/social rights - explores the positive actions of business through practical case studies. The considered viewpoints of different stakeholder groups are presented alongside references and further information as part of a moderated online discussion forum.
Case studies have been developed in close cooperation with a range of multinational companies, including De Beers, Standard Chartered, Chiquita International, HP, Marks & Spencer's, the Nike Foundation, Gap and Manpower. Engagement with companies is ongoing, with many more expected to contribute examples of positive human rights actions in 2009 and 2010.
