Maplecroft is expanding and seeks experienced professionals with expertise across a variety of sectors – particularly mining, energy, consumer goods, retail sales, and financial services.

We are currently seeking individuals with broad and specialist knowledge in several of these areas:

  • Human rights
  • Political risk and geopolitics
  • Macroeconomics/Development finance / Public finance
  • Climate change
  • Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ethical supply chain strategy

Assignments may include:

  • Research into carbon proficiency of companies
  • The development of indices, indicators and maps as well as the assessment of social, environmental and economic performance and trends
  • The identification, research and analysis of global, regional and country-specific economic and political risks

Applicants should have a masters degree or PhD in relevant subject and at least 2-3 years' relevant practical experience in risk consulting, research or similar. Some senior roles are available.

Candidates should be highly literate, with advanced IT skills and demonstrable proficiency in the full Microsoft Office suite. They should also have strong quantitative analytical skills, superior writing and presentation skills and a deep understanding of research methodology.

The position will require an ability to manage time effectively and work under time pressure. Applicants should be innovative and creative, with strong interpersonal communication skills, and comfortable working in an interdisciplinary, multi-cultural team with formal peer review.

The role is based in Maplecroft's Bath offices.

The successful applicant will join our GIS team and contribute to taking our map based products to the next level. The work will involve liaising with researchers, managers and IT team in order to incorporate GIS into our work flow, research and products.

Applicants should have a PhD or masters degree with at least 3 years GIS analysis experience in one or more of the following areas: environment, ecology, health, climate change, water, international development, mining or energy. They should also have strong quantitative analytical modelling skills, a deep understanding of GIS concepts, its implementation and developments in the sector as well as advanced technical IT skills. A global outlook and relevant international working experience is highly desired.

The position will require an ability to manage time and GIS projects effectively, work under pressure and build network relations with clients. Applicants should be innovative and creative with strong interpersonal communication skills, comfortable working independently as well as in an interdisciplinary multi-cultural team with formal peer review.

You will have responsibility for the following:

  • Development of GIS (ArcGIS, MapServer, GeoNetwork) applications to access, query and view spatial data
  • Build and expand existing spatial models (ArcInfo AML, ArcObjects)
  • Administer GIS data infrastructure including meta-data
  • Work with management team and researchers to define GIS application strategies and to develop detailed specifications

You will have knowledge/experience of the following:

  • ArcGIS Desktop and Workstation, and open source applications such as GRASS and R
  • Using Earth Observation data to develop quantitative indicators
  • Scripting experience in a relevant language (such as Python, VBA, or AML)
  • Spatial database design and management (preferably PostgreSQL/PostGIS)
  • Development of Google Earth applications
  • Good overview of availability of global GIS datasets
  • Geocoding
  • Open web mapping standards such as WMS, WFS

Applicants should have a PhD relating to international development, health (especially HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB), international relations, human rights, the environment (preferably with GIS experience), mining, energy, consumer goods, retail sales, or financial services. Nike Foundation and Maplecroft are looking for an individual to fill the following role:

Manage grants: Manage all aspects of a portfolio of grantee relationships including but not limited to: programmatic advice, grantee communications, alignment with measurement & evaluation team, funds flow checkpoints, grant progress updates and grant administration.

  • Program Design and Innovation: With comprehensive knowledge of the Nike Foundation’s focus and strategy, expertise in adolescent girl programs and deep knowledge of NF grantee and existing portfolio, work with grantees to develop targeted and impactful program design for each of the grantees in your portfolio.
  • Drive outcomes and impact: work to define success for each grant under your management. Take ownership of program activities to insure that deliverables and outcomes of each grant are on track and continue to maximize return on the investment of grant funds. Engage directly and regularly with measurement and evaluation experts to ensure the program is designed with evaluation objectives tightly aligned. Identify opportunities to accelerate success and broaden the impact of each grant program.
  • Communicate: Regularly update the Portfolio Director on progress, major insights and learnings, issues and challenges. Proactively serve up recommendations and solutions. Present formal updates to Nike Foundation team members and partners in our portfolio review sessions and other such forums.

Institutional Transformation: Promote, educate, and design girl-centered programming for your organizations under your portfolio management. This may include a selection of multinational and bilateral organizations, national governments, private donors, research organizations, academic institutions, and non-governmental organizations.

Strategic Planning: Be actively engaged in the investment planning and evaluation process. Take a leadership role in identifying innovative program models and developing category level investment initiatives (as part of a larger team process) aligned with and in support of the Foundation’s strategy. Contribute to NF’s strategic planning process to insure that the Foundation continues to be highly innovative in our approach to our areas of focus and connected to the expertise of the field.

Administration: Establish appropriate milestones and goals for each grantee and manage a process for performance review. Be responsible to provide appropriate scorecarding and management reports to the Portfolio Director as defined and required by working closely with strategic planning, finance and operations, and communications.

Maplecroft: for an average duration of half a day per week represent Maplecroft in meetings and correspondence with possible partner or client organisations in the areas of: nongovernmental organisations, foundations, development agencies and UN and other inter-governmental organisations.

The Software team is responsible for Maplecroft's information delivery infrastructure:

  • managing and developing existing services such as the Global Risks Portal
  • prototyping, developing and deploying new services
  • exploring new technologies and applications
  • developing the data-gathering tools and research database behind all of Maplecroft’s services

We are currently looking for software developers to join the team. e.g.:

  • A recent graduate who can demonstrate an interest in, and an aptitude for, software development in any area. Any experience in web development, Python, Open Source and SQL would be an advantage but is not essential
  • A developer with significant experience of server-side web development, ideally in Python though this is not essential.

For either role, experience with any of the following would be advantageous: Django, Apache, MySQL or PostgreSQL, GIS, JavaScript, OpenLayers or similar Open Source mapping library

You will be joining a small, enthusiastic team working in a fast-moving, customer-driven environment. Flexibility and the ability to innovate are essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively.
