Maplecroft staff are doing a sponsored walk on 21 Aug to raise money for Women for Women International, helping women survivors of war.
Why Women for Women International?
Women for Women International is behind some crucial programs worldwide designed to empower female victims of war to rebuild their lives. Projects are run in countries including DR Congo, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Sudan and Rwanda.
Today, women are disproportionately affected by conflict. Women for Women International estimate that in today's wars, 90 percent of casualties are civilians, and 75 percent of those are women and children.
Amongst the reasons why they are targeted for killings, rape, torture and slavery is because they are essential for social cohesion, and are often heads of households, especially during civil war. Targeting women shames the men in their ethnic or tribal group who are not able to protect them and this has been a very effective way of undoing society for generations in many conflict-torn places.
In June 2008, the UN Security Council unanimously approved a resolution classifying rape as a weapon of war. However, there is some way to go to recognise the rehabilitation needs of survivors of such human rights violations. In this context, Women for Women International play a leading and essential role.
